Russian Succession
In 1797 Emperor Paul I established the stable, predictable order of succession, in which His Throne is reserved firstly to all His valid male-line male descendants (agnates) by order of primogeniture, then, upon total extinction of agnates, to His valid male-line female descendants (cognates ) and to their valid issue by order of substitution. The last, 51st, agnate died in 1992, when the headship was succeeded by female.
